Cutting Board Tablet Stand

Simple - Creative - Thrifty

Everyday when I wake up during Christmas season (which for me starts around mid-October) my head feels like what I imagine Usain Bolt's legs feel like right before the gun to mark the start of a race goes off. Except that I'm bursting with the many craft ideas that I absolutely must get done before December 24th instead of adrenaline and muscle mass. Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but hey, the holidays are practically the Olympics for food and craft bloggers right?

Anyway this craft is very easy, really all you need is some wood glue!

You will need...

chalkboard paint (I used Martha Stewart Chalkboard Paint, Black)
wood glue
1 wooden cutting board
1 Scrabble tile bench
1 back of a picture frame (with fold out stand, size depends on the size of your cutting board - a larger board would need a larger stand)

Step 1

Using a stencil or free-hand, paint a space on the surface of the cutting board with the chalkboard paint that you wish to make the front of the stand where it will be possible to leave chalk notes.

Allow the first coat to dry and apply a second coat.

Step 2

Once the second coat of the chalkboard paint has dried, colour over the entire painted surface with chalk and then erase with an eraser or a damp rag. This will remove the finish of the paint.

Step 3

Apply a layer of wood glue to the backside of the picture frame stand. Press glue side of picture frame stand down on the reverse side of the cutting board, aligned along the very bottom edge of the cutting board (see below). Allow 2 hours for glue to dry before moving on, lying cutting board on surface with the picture frame side down in order to apply pressure during the drying period.

Step 4

Once glue is dry, apply a layer of wood glue to the backside of the Scrabble tile bench. Press glue side of the tile down on the front side of the cutting board, below chalkboard paint and as close to the bottom as possible in order to fit the tablet within the area of the cutting board. Allow 2 hours for glue to dry, lying cutting board backside down as applying any pressure to the tile bench by resting on the frontside may cause it to slide around.

Step 5

Write a nice message on the front and you're all done!

If you are giving this as a gift it is always nice to include a chalkboard marker for your loved one to personalize the cutting board - they could even forget the tablet and simply use this gift as a display board for kitchen notes or the day's menu! If you haven't tried using one, chalkboard markers make a world of difference when trying to keep things neat, including your fingers!

You could even use it as a cookbook stand if the book is thin enough!
